Description
The Buddhist Hanging Monastery (Xuankong Temple) clings to the cliffside of Mount Heng, near Datong City, China. While a very popular site with Chinese tourists, walking through this complex can be vertigo inducing. The upper rooms contain some fabulous Buddhist statues.
The support poles are for show only, to help convince Chinese tourists that it is safe to enter and tour through the 40 odd rooms. The buildings and walkway bridge are cantilevered so effectively that they do not need any support from below.
