Description
About this image
This grizzly bear (=brown bear) was walking a stream-side bear trail, always watching for salmon in the adjacent river, the Fishing Branch River in the northern Yukon Territory. I was sitting on the riverbank with a local guide and three other photographers as this bear approached us, and was about 8-m (25-ft) away from this amazingly beautiful and intelligent apex predator when the photo was taken. She is in 'ice bear' mode with icicles coating her body because she has repeatedly been in and out of the river, chasing salmon, and pacing the river bank in the cold -15 C air.
Image information
This photo was shot with a 250mm focal length lens at f/5.6, a 1/2000 second exposure, and with the camera at 4000 ISO. As with all my photos and digital art, it was processed in Photoshop; I used Silver Efex Pro for the monochrome conversion. It was deliberately prepared to be a little grainy and has just a hint of dark blue color toning, giving it abundant texture and a true winter feel.
