Artist's Description
Up close and personal with some grizzly bear (- brown bear) paws and toenails. The beautiful brown translucent nails of this bear are a little iced up as it was standing on the shore of a river in the Yukon on a cold October day.
Brown bears congregate on the Fishing Branch River, far north in the Yukon Territory in the autumn to feed on chum salmon that migrate to this river very late in the season (warm springs percolate up through the river bottom here). On the mountain above the river there are caves that the happy and full grizzlies can waddle up to after their salmon feast, safe places to slumber during the long winter, which is why this area is known as Bear Cave Mountain.

Thank you all for your kind comments below! I've got a wide angle shot of my main camera with telephoto looking at this bear when I was shooting the claws - will have to post that sometime on FAA. She turned to give me a good stare when I leaned back to shoot with the second camera. I guess she was probably about 25 ft away when I snapped this image, and I moved just enough to draw her attention for the wide angle shot.
