Artist's Description
White rhinos wake at dawn and go into a defensive formation first thing in the morning. This monochrome image was taken at Lake Nakuru, Kenya in May, 2016. Due to rampant poaching, this herd has a round-the-clock armed guard. Lake Nakuru National Park, the oldest in Kenya, has a rich variety of wildlife but it also has a large human population nearby in the Rift Valley.
This photo was shot with a 300-mm focal length lens at f/8, 1/125 second shutter speed, and with the camera at 1250 ISO. As with all my photos and digital art, it was processed in Photoshop; I used Silver Efex Pro for the monochrome conversion, which emulates 400 ISO black and white film (with a little film grain). The image has a 1x3 aspect ratio and is best-suited for printing on rag (matte) paper or stretched canvas finishes.

Thanks everyone for your kind comments. Fingers crossed this herd is still being protected - with tourism entries have fallen so drastically in Kenya, and across Africa, a lot of wildlife has come under pressure (poaching unfortunately seems to be one of the robust industries, able to function and with product demand no matter what else is happening in the world)
