Oh man, you're killing me with these amazing grizzly photographs! Love this one where we can see all the great details of her icy fur. Great description too...must've been a little scary when she got that close!

Murray Rudd replied:

Thanks Peggy. It wasn't scary - amazing how having one person with a shotgun helps! The only time I was really nervous on this trip was when I had to head to the outhouse in the middle of the night. The bears had a couple of regular scratching trees in camp so there were bear prints all over the place, right to the steps of the cook cabin. It was a great incentive not to have that extra glass of beer or wine in the evening!

Artist's Description

In this monochrome image, an iced-up grizzly bear is in the river after salmon. She is doing the uncanny bear thing with one eyeball, her right, looking directly at me, and the other, angled off substantially watching a ripe chum salmon splash in the very bottom right corner of the image. A few seconds after this was shot, she charged down river right in front of me on the shore, passing within about 4-5 m (12-15 ft) in front, unsuccessfully trying to chase down that salmon. Shot at Bear Cave Mountain, on the Fishing Branch River, Yukon Territory; it was about -18 C so after splashing around fishing, the grizzly's wet fur would freeze up quickly and, hence, the icicle coating.

Image information

This photo was shot with a 247-mm focal length at f/4, a 1/1000 second exposure, and with the camera at 1600 ISO. As with all my photos and digital art, it was processed in Photoshop; I used Silver Efex Pro for the monochrome conversion. The image has a 2x3 aspect ratio and is equa...
