Description
About this image
An aggressive immature bald eagle tucks right under the wing of a mature bald eagle standing it's ground over food.
Chicken farmers near Sheffield Mills have been providing scraps from their barns to eagles for 30-years. This was not some trick to attract photographers but dates to a time when bald eagle populations in the USA were under severe pressure (toxic agriculture chemicals were causing low reproductive success) and bald eagles were endangered. Nova Scotia had a much 'purer' environment and was used as a place to help rebuild US eagle populations. Farmers in Nova Scotia were encouraged to feed the eagles to help them overwinter and the practice carried on in the Annapolis Valley. While photography here is hardly a wilderness experience, Sheffield Mills provides a stellar environment to photograph cranky, hungry eagles that congregate in groups sometimes exceeding 100 birds. Eagles love to fight as much as they love to eat, so most days there is non-stop action with in-the-air and on-the-ground battles in winter conditions.

Thank you Jen - it takes some patience but there is a ton of action at this location, so it is great to be able to shoot a lot of images in anticipation of what you think may happen (I was to the stage last winter I started to recognize a couple of the real trouble-makers, which included the younger bird in this image).
