Description
About this image
This large male lion is known locally as Scarface in the Masai Mara National Reserve, Kenya. He lost a big chunk of skin on his forehead in a fight back in 2012 and skin partially obscures his vision in his right eye, even though the eye itself looks healthy. I had the pleasure of having Scarface all to myself a couple of times last November while in the Masai Mara, including once while he was lazing in the early morning sun and once, when this was shot, in perfect late-afternoon golden hour light.
(2022 postscript: Scarface died in 2021 - of old age - so I was very glad to have had so much alone time with him on my last Mara visit).

Thanks very much Matthew - he was just so casual, knowing exactly his place and rank in the Mara food chain (and mine!)

Thank you Jerry! This was such a cool shoot - just hung out with him for about half an hour and eventually he just got up and wandered so close to the Land Cruiser that I couldn't focus that tight. He's one of four dominant males in that part of the Mara and he knows that he really is king of the hill

This is just flat out terrific. Love the detail, the background and simplicity of the shoy/

Thank you Aditya - it was an amazing experience to have him just staring, really being indifferent about me and not even worthy of any effort or thought
